About Judd Greenstein
Composer Judd Greenstein was born and raised in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City, where he began his compositional life by writing hip hop beats as a teenager. His concert works reflect those origins, as well as his traditional piano background, combining an urban, beat-oriented sensibility with a late Romantic classical harmonic language. A passionate advocate for the indie classical community in New York, Judd most frequently has his music performed at a diverse array of that city's venues, from Carnegie Hall and Symphony Space to clubs such as Le Poisson Rouge, Joe’s Pub, and Galapagos Art Space. Outside of New York, recent performances took place at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle, the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Bang on a Can Summer Festival Marathon at Mass MoCA. Judd holds degrees from Williams College and the Yale School of Music, is the managing director of NOW Ensemble and the co-director of New Amsterdam Records, and is completing his doctoral dissertation at Princeton University.
Judd was recently awarded the first Minnesota Orchestra Musical MicroCommission and the Six Points Fellowship in the Arts. Current composition projects include a piece for string quartet plus analog synthesizers for ETHEL, a string trio for the Rochester-based Gibbs & Main, and an evening-length work (Shlomo) for his 15-person ensemble, The Yehudim, exploring the life of King Solomon. Part of Shlomo will premiere at Merkin Concert Hall in March, as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival, a 14-concert series of collaborations by artists working across genre lines, curated by Judd and taking place from January through March, 2011. The coming year will see two releases of Judd's chamber music: Change will appear on the second album by chamber quintet NOW Ensemble(of which Judd is a member), out in May, and Clearing, Dawn, Dance will appear on the the Fall debut recording of yMusic, a sextet of conservatory-trained players who regularly cross genre lines in their own musical lives. As a producer, Judd is helming the NOW Ensemble project, as well as a recording by NOW and yMusic flutist Alex Sopp. Performance plans for next year include a European tour with violist Nadia Sirota and an Asian tour with NOW Ensemble.
