I love sound. I love music. I love harp. And I love Zeena Parkins. She understands and orchestrates these elements in a profound way. On her new recording, "Three Harps, Tuning Forks and Electronics", she has managed to expand her wondrous sensibilities as a composer, improviser, and practitioner of extended techniques on the harp with hauntingly beautiful and deeply personal results. While each piece may be an examination/exploration of what I could term Zeena's language, there is, in every one, a patience and eloquence that ultimately evinces an arrival of sorts in a moving yet restrained sonic/compositional place - a place that makes one gratefully re-embrace the magic of sound and music. I can say with utter confidence that this is already one of my favorite recordings of 2017, as well as one of my favorite recordings by Zeena Parkins. May I be lucky enough to hear these pieces in concert!
